From his hands to mine.

Papa Abbey Pāpale honors the weaving traditions rooted in ʻike kūpuna, passed down through my grandfather, who learned from the Waikīkī Beach Boys. What I create today is not a recreation but a continuation of that knowledge. Each piece begins with hand-harvested materials from Oʻahu and is woven with intention in Kāneʻohe-Kahaluʻu.

Workshops

Hands-on weaving workshops have previously been offered in private settings, community spaces, Native Hawaiian student programs across University of Hawaiʻi campuses, and resort partnerships. Participants learn to weave a pāpale niu or lau niu basket while building foundational skills to continue the practice on their own.

Future workshop dates will be announced as they become available. Join our ʻohana to stay in the loop.

Fresh
Dried

Fresh lau niu begins in vibrant green and slowly dries to warm, golden tones. The natural beauty of this drying process is shaped by time, air, and sun exposure. Each piece will dry differently.
